To a chinchilla, hay is the “staff of life”. The fiber found in hay is essential to a chin’s health. Chins convert the cellulose in hay into carbohydrates. So, while it’s important to provide high quality pellets for necessary vitamins and minerals, the importance of feeding high quality hay is often overlooked. It has been proven that chinchillas can live almost indefinitely on a diet of good quality hay and water. Kleenmama’s Hayloft hay is excellent (and affordable) hay grown in the Pacific Northwest. Needless to say, as with any good hay, Kleenmama’s Hayloft hay is mold and spray free. Our chins love Kleenmama's Hayloft hay! This fine hay is available in two types:
Timothy (2nd cut) which has long been a traditional favorite. It is mostly green with some brown stem. It is fairly short with very few stems and seedheads.
Bluegrass which is soft, sweet-smelling and very green. It makes a great “variety” hay. While most chins seem to like it right away, for others, it’s a bit of an acquired taste.
